UN PO’ DI STORIA – Bruschetta

Bruschetta (pronunciation: Brusketta) originated around the 15th century during the Roman era and is derived from the Roman dialect ‘bruscare’ or ‘abbrustolire’ in Italian. This means ‘toasting’ or ‘toasting over cabbage’ which links to toasting the bread and then dipping it in oil.

There are many different variations of bruschetta but with the Italians, it will always contain olive oil, garlic and salt as a base.

On the right, hear from a real Italian nonna how you are actually supposed to pronounce bruschetta.

UN PO’ DI STORIA – Aperitivo

Italians make a habit of meeting up for an aperitivo before dinner. An aperitivo is an (alcoholic) drink accompanied by tasty snacks.

The first aperitivo bars emerged around 1800 in Milan, and about 100 years later this tasty trend spread to the rest of Italy. This is how they ‘open their stomachs’ before dinner. The low-sugar, bitter-flavoured drinks ensure that the appetite is well whetted. And that, of course, is not complete without the appetisers, such as various types of meats and/or cheese with sweet and sour, olives, anchovies, tuna and grilled vegetables on oil.

The specialities vary by area and even by city. So the possibilities are endless! Experiment to see what suits you.

NEW: Bertolli Pasta

We are proud to present our 100% Italian pasta in 100% recyclable paper packaging. With this introduction, we bring traditional Italian quality pasta to the Netherlands so that Dutch consumers can also enjoy pasta the way Italians like it.

Made from 100% Italian durum wheat for a firm bite.
The use of authentic bronze moulds gives the pasta a rougher surface, so the sauce is better absorbed.
What also makes it so thoroughly Italian is the longer drying time and the spring water from the Dolomites we use.
