UN PO’ DI STORIA – Aperitivo

Italians make a habit of meeting up for an aperitivo before dinner. An aperitivo is an (alcoholic) drink accompanied by tasty snacks.

The first aperitivo bars emerged around 1800 in Milan, and about 100 years later this tasty trend spread to the rest of Italy. This is how they ‘open their stomachs’ before dinner. The low-sugar, bitter-flavoured drinks ensure that the appetite is well whetted. And that, of course, is not complete without the appetisers, such as various types of meats and/or cheese with sweet and sour, olives, anchovies, tuna and grilled vegetables on oil.

The specialities vary by area and even by city. So the possibilities are endless! Experiment to see what suits you.
